Kwa Miganda

Karambi Eco-Cultural Heritage

This Project, Kwa Miganda Karambi Eco-Cultural Heritage, is located in Mwaro Province, at 6 km from the renowned Agasumo sacred Falls and the Mwaro city center. The site is within a region with a rich history and culture, due to its closeness to the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Burundi.

Kwa Miganda, Karambi Eco-Cultural Heritage is a One-Stop-Center for learning some aspects of Burundi Ancestral Knowledge such as the use of natural and indigenous species of plants and trees, traditional technology related to food preparation and conservation, preparation of local wine from sorghum or banana, traditional art and handcraft.

The site is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, small rivers and mountains. Currently, the site is subdivided in two parts: one has a traditional rugo surrounded by trees and traditional medicinal plants in order to showcase the region’s art of life.  The other part of the site is allocated to future constructions using local materials including a Cultural Centre that will host gatherings with a number of stands for selling local traditional products from the surrounding communities (including pots from Batwa community).

The philosophy of this initiative is deeply rooted in what is known as “Civilisation du Vegetal”, which is the main feature of ancestral Burundi.

Tourists have the opportunity of visiting surrounding rivers, including Agasumo Falls, local vegetation, existing historical places, and they also get to listen to stories and myths of the region. Karambi and the region as a whole is a family destination for cultural education and leisure.
